- Before it goes to sea, the Soviet Union's top-secret nuclear submarine K-19 is beset by ominous problems that earn it the name "the widowmaker". Captain Vostrikov takes command of the submarine before it is launched for final tests. Ex-captain Polenin becomes his assistant but the changes set up a deadly tension on board. When disaster strikes in the Atlantic Ocean, the submarine becomes a time bomb that threatens to ignite a nuclear explosion and propel the two superpowers towards the point of no return. The two senior officers must set aside personal differences in the face of the terrifying circumstances.
